Target Building Materials

On May of 1967, Moe Drouillard left his position with Glass Insulation Company to open a specialty building supply company to deal primarily with trades people in Windsor and Essex County. The result was Target Building Materials.

The following year the company moved from its original site, which was located at the intersection of Howard Avenue and what is now the E.C. Row Expressway, to an 8,000 sq. foot facility with a 600 sq. ft. cottage as an office. The new site, which is the current location at 3245 County Road 42 (across from the Airport Terminal), provided Target with 3 acres of property and an 8,000 sq. ft. building to improve its commitment to the building supply market in the Windsor area.

Current company president Greg Drouillard began working for his father on a part-time basis while still in school. Upon completion of his studies, Greg joined the firm on a full-time basis in 1974. He started working in the warehouse and in the ensuing years has served the company in all departments.

1975 saw the second big change at the company as a major addition doubled the square footage to 16,000 sq. ft. Through all of this growth, the original 'cottage' building which had been moved from the first location, was still in use. Five years later it was time to grow again and Target Building Materials almost doubled in size. The 29,000-sq. ft. achieved with that last expansion is what is being used today. The current offices and showroom were constructed following the 1975 expansion. The original 'cottage', with all its sentimental value, fell victim to the series of expansions and was sold to another local LBM specialty retailer.

Institutional, commercial and industrial sales remain the core market with Target, but residential and "do it yourself" business has evolved as well, and augments the overall growth in business. The current staff numbers a team of 10 people. Greg attributes the staff's knowledge and courteous, friendly rapport with customers and suppliers as one of the key elements in their success. He is quick to praise the efforts of all who work with the company.

Realizing the importance of product knowledge for the staff, Target takes advantage of their suppliers' training and product knowledge offerings on an ongoing basis. This training bears fruit every day, as local contractors are aware that they can rely on Target to provide them with materials that are compatible with their requirements.

Greg, who has the full responsibility of heading up Target Building Materials, pledges that he will continue to focus on the relationships with suppliers and customers originally instituted by his father. The future of Target Building Materials looks to be in good hands.
